Core subject for BEd (ECE) students.
This subject introduces students to early childhood principles and practice, based
on the National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education, the Early
Years Learning Framework and the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline.
Taking a play-based approach, the curriculum decision-making processes of planning,
interacting, monitoring, assessing and reflecting will be explored in relation to
documenting the learning and development of a focal child. Six (6) full days of professional
experience in a prior to school setting will offer students the opportunity to link
theoretical learning to classroom practice. (Note: the 6 days professional experience
is spread over 6 weeks, that is, 1 day per week)
Learning Outcomes
- develop an understanding of early childhood principles and practice, based on the
National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education, the Early Years
Learning Framework and the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline;
- develop an understanding of a play-based approach to curriculum decision-making;
- develop and apply skills in creating an Situational Analysis; documenting children's
learning and development for planning, interacting, monitoring and assessing children's
learning; and creating a Transition Statement for reporting learning and development;
- demonstrated Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at a developed level.

Assumed knowledge in this subject includes an understanding of the development of
the young child in terms of physical, social, emotional, cognitive and language development
as studied in ED1481:03 Foundations of Educational Psychology.
