This subject presents a comprehensive overview of sedimentary basins and their significance for the formation of traditional and emerging energy resources and role in carbon sequestration. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the context between sedimentary environments, stratigraphy and diagenesis for the formation and emplacement of coal and hydrocarbons, as well as emerging critical resources for green energy and climate adaption, including lithium, hydrogen, helium, and carbon sequestration. The subject includes a discourse through geological time to study basin analysis based on outcrops, core logs, seismic analysis, and sedimentary provenance.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand and critically appraise the processes and formation of energy resources;
  • Understand global environmental change and its significance for our modern energy resources;
  • Analyse and Identify sedimentary basins and the tectonic controls on basin location and formation;
  • Analyse and Identify energy resources including hydrocarbons, coal, lithium, hydrogen and helium.
