EA3130 - Advanced Petrology

Credit points: 3
Year: 2021
Student Contribution Band: Band 2
Administered by: College of Science and Engineering

This is an advanced subject in the petrology and geochemistry of igneous and metamorphic rocks. The subject provides an overview of petrological processes in magmatic and metamorphic environments with thermodynamic and geochemical tools. The subject also covers the various magmatic and metamorphic processes in relation to plate tectonics and the evolution of the Earth.

Learning Outcomes

  • Recall the processes operating to produce igneous activity in various tectonic settings;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of geochemical and isotopic approaches to monitoring magmatic processes;
  • Explain the key processes involved in magma differentiation;
  • Discuss the main concepts and physical controls of crustal metamorphism;
  • Summarise the relationship between geotherm and P-T path;
  • Systematically describe, in conjunction with the phase rule, the role of fluids and whole rock composition on metamorphic reactions.

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (10%) - Individual
  • Written > Field report - (20%) - Group & Individual
  • Written > Lab/Practical report - (20%) - Individual.
