Building on DS1102, this subject includes an expanded range of simulated dentistry exercises in order to prepare students for their transition to clinical dentistry. The subject combines both theory and practical training, increasing the student's knowledge and understanding of oral disease, particularly the caries process and periodontal disease, whilst also developing their hands-on ability and clinical thinking. Allied to this, there will be an emphasis on professional attitude and ethical behaviour in the clinical setting. An emphasis will also be placed on research and evidence-based practice, and the requirement for life-long learning. Students will be introduced to normal craniofacial development, laying the foundations for later studies of orthodontics. The subject will also extend students' understanding of the medical management of their patients, and the special medical needs of many patient groups.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate competency in preparing cavities and restoring permanent teeth in the simulated environment in line with contemporary dental practice;
  • Explain the materials and processes associated with restorative dentistry;
  • Discuss the aetiology, risk factors and management strategies associated with periodontal disease;
  • Explain the primary infection control principles as they apply to dental practice;
  • Discuss the physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology of the major organ systems, and the potential implications for patient oral health and the safe management of patients in the dental clinic;
  • Discuss the role of basic and clinical research in informing the practice of contemporary clinical dentistry.

Satisfactory attendance is required at (pre)clinical placements. Satisfactory academic and professional standard, as described in the College Assessment Guidelines, must be achieved in order to progress
