The subject introduces students to an overview of motivation and background of the
new database developments. It is intended as an introduction to the most important
advances with respect to the classical relational database systems. Through the subject,
students will not only review principles and concepts of database systems but also
develop knowledge of current DBMS support for Information Systems. Students will develop
skills in techniques and tools to model, design, implement a database system and in
addition acquire the ability to make informed DBMS selection from a critical appreciation
of key database issues.
