This subject addresses the legal foundations of business. Focus will be on the nature,
role and sources of law; the major legal systems of the world; the common law system;
the laws regulating agreements, obligations and property; industrial and intellectual
property; restrictive trade practices and fair trading; financial instruments and
securities; technology transfers including licensing and franchising; legal process
and alternative dispute resolution.
Learning Outcomes
- understand national and international legal and regulatory systems within which business
operates;
- understand key legal provisions that impact on business, its structure(s), and method(s)
of operation;
- compare and contrast the competing needs and interests of business entities, their
owners, consumers, creditors and society as a whole and critique the ability of the
current legal framework to balance and satisfy those competing needs and interests.
