CC3650 - Digital Control and Automation

Control systems is an interdisciplinary field with a broad range of applications from vehicles to robots and process control systems. This subject will focus on the practical implementation of the control theory in real-world applications. The first half of the subject will introduce the basics of the classical control theory, including representation of physical control systems, modelling of closed-loop systems, and control system analysis and design using time and frequency techniques. The second half of the subject will cover practical industrial control systems. Students will design and tune common algorithms such as proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. The subject will also cover the design and implementation of control systems using programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

Learning Outcomes

  • develop control systems models of physical systems, including block diagrams and transfer functions;
  • analyse the time and frequency characteristics of a control system and use time and frequency response techniques to assist control system design;
  • develop simulations of control systems and apply simulation methods to the analysis and verification of the control system design;
  • understand the communication links involved with PLC systems, the protocols and networking methods;
  • design and develop programmable logic controller software using industry standard languages.
