This subject builds on topics introduced in core business subjects. It is based on the premise that the ultimate consumer is critical to the success of marketing efforts. Examining how and why internal, external and situational factors influence the decision making process and behaviour of consumers is the focus of the subject. Contemporary issues in consumer behaviour are examined and marketing implications are discussed. Knowledge gained from this subject is important for later subjects such as integrated marketing communications and strategic marketing. This subject is a core requirement for the marketing major. You are required to have completed the core foundation marketing subject before enrolling in consumer behaviour.

Learning Outcomes

  • apply the knowledge gained from consumer behaviour to the development of an effective consumer marketing program;
  • demonstrate effective communication skills and the ability to work with others in a professional manner;
  • critically analyse and evaluate the effects of various internal, external and situational factors on the behaviour or behavioural change of consumers;
  • examine ethical issues as they relate to marketing activities; consider the dark side of consumer behaviour and the related impact on consumption behaviour and society;
  • compare and contrast consumer decision making across a range of buyer involvement situations and demonstrate the impact of consumption on society, environment and business.
