AT8302 - Surgical Anatomy of the Trunk and Lower Limbs

Available to Graduate Diploma of Surgical Anatomy students, or by permission of the Course Coordinator.

This subject is the second of two subjects that form the Graduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy. The Graduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy is a course providing instruction in clinically relevant anatomy to Australian medical and dental graduates and AHPRA registered health practitioners or those with an equivalent overseas qualification. As part of this subject students will undertake studies in histology, embryology and advanced topographical anatomy of the lower limb, thorax, abdomen and pelvis and will include compulsory residential cadaveric dissection workshops.

Learning Outcomes

• Apply and adapt advanced anatomical knowledge and technical skills to structural identification and regional cadaveric dissection of the lower limb, thorax, abdomen and pelvis;
• Review, consolidate and synthesise knowledge of anatomical development (embryology), tissue structure (histology), and functional systematic structure (topographical anatomy) to identify anatomical variants and analyse the clinical and surgical implications of such variants of the lower limb, thorax, abdomen and pelvis;
• Demonstrate effective and concise oral and written communication skills;
• Critically analyse scientific research papers;
• Critically interpret and evaluate how normal structure and anatomical variation of structure relate to normal and abnormal function of the lower limb, thorax, abdomen and pelvis;
• Relate advanced anatomical knowledge of the lower limb, thorax, abdomen and pelvis to the development of pathology, functional complications and management options.

• Performance/Practice/Product > Practical assessment/practical skills demonstration - (30%) - Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Practical assessment/practical skills demonstration 2 - (20%) - Individual.

Special Assessment Requirements

For successful completion of this subject: students must attend all scheduled workshops; students must pass (50% or more) all assessment items
